Agility partners with SPAN to provide state of the art warehousing solutions in KSA
25 Jul 2019

Over the past few years, Agility has solidified its position as one of the world’s leading logistics brands through organic growth and acquisitions.  Its services cover the entire supply chain, from freight to project, chemical, events and contract logistics making it one of the largest integrated logistics providers in the Middle East & North Africa.

SPAN has been fortunate to have played a role in Agility’s expansion.  The relationship with Agility dates back to over 20 years with early projects executed in Kuwait.  Since then, SPAN has worked with Agility on projects spread across Africa, GCC, Levant, as well as Afghanistan.  In 2017, Agility engaged SPAN on a project in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The newly built 22,000 square meter facility was designed to handle a different range of product categories including fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), chemicals, and tobacco.

In 2018, Agility was awarded a major contract with one of the largest pharmaceuticals & medical equipment distributors in Saudi Arabia.   This required a facility that had to be approved by the SFDA and that could cater for the client’s current business as well as future expansion plans.  Agility re-engaged SPAN to reconfigure the existing warehouse in Dammam to meet their customer’s terms and to optimally cater for the pharmaceutical and medical industry. The warehouse, previously designed to accommodate a wide range of products had to be quickly redesigned to meet very specific and challenging requirements.  The team had a very difficult task that needed to be designed and executed in a limited timeframe and that required certain components to be sourced regionally to expedite the delivery process. ‘We initially thought that the timelines provided were extremely aggressive and almost impossible’ commented Mr. Ghassan Daniel, SPAN KSA Director. ‘This project would normally take at least eight weeks and we had to deliver in four’ added Mr. Ghassan.  ‘Despite the pressure to deliver a flawless facility in a condensed timeframe, our teams took the high level plan and turned it into reality, just as we imagined’, stated Mr. Shanmugam, head of contracts logistics at Agility.

As a result, Agility ended up with two state of the art facilities in Dammam and Riyadh that incorporated a VNA storage system encompassing 60,000 square meters which could cater for over 50,000 bins and 75,000 pallets. After successfully completing Dammam facility and phase one in Riyadh, phase two comprising of 30,000 pallet positions is planned to commence soon in order to complete the works at Riyadh facility.
