Schneider Electric, a global leader in energy management and automation, has installed a new Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) solution at its UAE Smart Distribution Hub. The solution is fully electric and will support Schneider Electric in increasing energy efficiency, sustainability, and worker safety across its hub operations.

This project represents a significant collaboration between Schneider Electric, SPAN, and the expertise of Jungheinrich teams from Germany. SPAN, a trusted name in automation, has supplied and installed Jungheinrich’s state-of-the-art AGV technology at Schneider Electric’s award winning, solar-powered Regional Distribution Hub located in Jebel Ali Free Zone, UAE.

“The integration of AGV technology has allowed Schneider Electric to improve its hub operations’ reliability, productivity and workplace safety,” revealed Lovina Pereira, Head of Schneider Electric’s UAE-based Smart Regional Distribution Hub. “The AGVs have also allowed us to automate many repetitive tasks, enabling our workforce to dedicate more time to other pressing warehouse operations, thereby achieving greater productivity and operational efficiency.”

The AGVs not only enhance efficiency but also bolster safety. Elias Najem, Customer Service Manager at SPAN, highlighted this aspect, adding, “Increased safety is a key advantage of automation. With AGVs in place, operators are not required to perform repetitive tasks, which not only prevents errors but also guarantees a high level of safety.”

The SPAN team, in synergy with Jungheinrich experts, commissioned the AGV technology and provided comprehensive training to Schneider Electric’s hub team. The goal was to ensure that Schneider Electric’s logistics team becomes proficient in operating the technology, enabling a smooth transition towards a more automated and efficient warehouse management system.

Located in Jebal Ali, Schneider Electric’s Smart Regional Distribution Center is well on its way to becoming one of the most sustainable distribution hubs in the country. This is thanks to the implementation of key ‘Circular Economy initiatives such as being designated a ‘Zero-plastic’ site, electric-operated forklifts and, most importantly, because of its advanced solar rooftop solution that covers up to ninety percent of the site’s energy needs. Last year, the hub won in the ‘Best Use of Renewable Energy’ Category at Gulf Sustainability Awards for its solar roof-top grid, which offsets nearly 1,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
